Both the pilot and co pilot were also killed. The crash killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. On October 20, 1977, the band’s chartered plane crashed in a wooded area in the State of Mississippi.
